The laser peening (LSP) process has been in use since the 1990s to improve the fatigue life of metallic aerospace components by imparting a deep compressive residual stress on a component surface. The widespread adoption of LSP for both DoD and commercial applications has been limited by high costs for capital equipment, process development and part processing.
